Google just launched its Gemini AI model. Want to try it out for free? A version of the model, called Gemini Pro, is available inside of the Bard chatbot right now. Also, anyone with a Pixel 8 Pro can use a version of Gemini in their AI-suggested text replies with WhatsApp now and with Gboard in the future. Only a sliver of Gemini is currently available.

When Google announced the launch of its Bard chatbot last month, a competitor to OpenAI's ChatGPT, it came with some ground rules. An updated safety policy banned the use of Bard to "generate and distribute content intended to misinform, misrepresent or mislead." But a new study of Google's chatbot found that with little effort from a user, Bard will readily create that kind of content, breaking its maker's rules. Researchers from the Center for Countering Digital Hate, a UK-based nonprofit, say they could push Bard to generate "persuasive misinformation" in 78 of 100 test cases, including content denying climate change, mischaracterizing the war in Ukraine, questioning vaccine efficacy, and calling Black Lives Matter activists actors. "We already have the problem that it's already very easy and cheap to spread disinformation," says Callum Hood, head of research at CCDH. "But this would make it even easier, even more convincing, even more personal. So we risk an information ecosystem that's even more dangerous."

Google isn't used to playing catch-up in either artificial intelligence or search, but today the company is hustling to show that it hasn't lost its edge. It's starting the rollout of a chatbot called Bard to do battle with the sensationally popular ChatGPT. Bard, like ChatGPT, will respond to questions about and discuss an almost inexhaustible range of subjects with what sometimes seems like humanlike understanding. Google showed WIRED several examples, including asking for activities for a child who is interested in bowling and requesting 20 books to read this year. Bard is also like ChatGPT in that it will sometimes make things up and act weird.

In a video ad Google posted on Twitter, its yet-to-be-launched AI chatboard Bard confidently spouted misinformation about the James Webb Space Telescope. "JWST took the very first pictures of a planet outside of our own solar system," the chatbot replied, which is patently false. Now, the tech giant is looking to improve Bard's accuracy, and according to CNBC, it's asking employees for help. Google's VP for search, Prabhakar Raghavan, reportedly sent an email to staff members, asking them to rewrite Bard responses on topics they know well. The chatbot "learns best by example," Raghavan said, and training it with factual answers will help improve its accuracy.
